Attacks that hit high can be dodged by ducking, even without I-frames. They certainly have iframes in DaS2, but I'm not so certain they do in DaS1 (unless someone can correct me). You actually take more damage during backsteps than if you just stand and tank it, thanks to instability frames. Backsteps have 'limited' application, to say the least (some weapons have okish backstep attacks; others don't).
